Are you interested in becoming a member of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) EL Support Team?


The NCDPI EL Support Team follows a semi-annual application schedule for additional team members. Applications for the 2018-2019 school year have closed.


The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) EL Support Team,a cadre of current or former North Carolina teachers, administrators and retirees with a strong understanding of theory-based concepts for best-practices in EL student education? Team members contract through NCDPI to offer training and coaching opportunities across the state. This team has a strong history of effectively serving North Carolina schools and English learners. By applying to become a member of the team, you have an opportunity to showcase your knowledge and skills!
Applications demonstrating a strong understanding of theory-based concepts for best-practices in EL student education will be given priority. These concepts include academic language development, second language acquisition, literacy, authentic formative and summative assessments, technology integration, data-driven decision making, North Carolina academic standards, working with newcomers, ESL program models, co-teaching, and effective coaching. Additionally, outstanding presentation and organizational skills are a must! The current state-led initiatives include: Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP), Expediting Comprehension for English Language Learners (ExC-ELL), World-class Instructional Design and Assessment (WIDA), and LinguaFolio. Team members must be well-versed in these, as well as flexible and open to learning new initiatives as they arise.

IMPORTANT: Applicants should:
  • be available for no less than 5 days of training/coaching
  • be available to attend the mandatory Summer Team Training.
  • plan to apply to participate as a trainer in the EL Support Conference typically held in August. Trainers will be chosen based on the needs of the conference.


Professional (supervisor/administrator) recommendation is required. Upon receipt of your application, an email will be sent to the person indicated with a link to the reference form. The completed form is required in order for the application to be processed. Please alert the administrator to your desire to apply for EL Support Team membership before submitting the application.
NCDPI will provide ongoing training to the EL Support Team Members. Team members must commit to attending NCDPI-led training, which will take place face to face and/or virtually, throughout the year. The initial NCDPI-led training is typically held in the summer.

Contractual Agreement and Payment
  • Team members will be contractors for the NCDPI and will be given a contract for work assigned throughout the 2018-2019 school year.
  • Trainer rate of $50/hour (Max. $400/day) will be paid for each day of training/coaching. The $50/hour rate includes preparation for the training/coaching visits.
  • Administrative rate of $20/hour will be paid for administrative duties related to training and coaching assignments.

Phase I: Applicants complete an on-line and Curriculum Vita/resume portions of the application to indicate interest in participating as a member of the EL Support Team. Professional Recommendation forms are required as well.

Phase II: Applicants will be notified whether or not they have advanced to the Phase II of the application process. Phase II requires the submission of a 3-5 minute video clip. The rubric will be used by consultants to score and rank submissions in order to determine team membership.
